The Art Commision - Tips
Getting an art commissioning gig is never as easy as it sounds. Even once the contracts are signed that’s only the beginning of the story. It could just be the beginning of your worst nightmare if not suitably prepared. Don’t be naive and think everything is just plain sailing from here.
First things first. Now to begin with your going to have to agree on the particulars of the job. It is always best to get the specifics in writing if you’ve not already done so. Find out who has the last say in agreeing the project is as they desire, completed and ready for payment.
You might think you understand the outline of the art project. However the client might have an altogether different view of what is termed modern or classical art. Even the color scheme, if specified, might be an area to disagree on.
For example a broad outline of a work utilizing natures colors might point one person to the usage of greens as in the green of meadows and trees, blues as in the sky and browns as in a forest of trees. TO another it may be the whites and blues that you see on a italy ski vacation. However the client might actually be referring to the bright red orange sky of a sunset and the violet color of flowers and yellows of marigolds. It cannot be stressed enough that both artist and client need to be on the same page as to the actual art outcome expected.
Ask how many people and who will be having the final word on the completed project. Get contact and name information of all them. The best scenario would be only having one person that states the artwork is to their specification and they are happy with it. Hopefully they are not to fussy and don’t want too many changes as the project comes along.
